What is a
newborn care specialist?
Newborn Care Specialists are highly qualified care professionals who use their advanced trainings and skills to provide complete daily care for infants and supportive education to their families. Maybe you are familiar with the terms “night nurse” or “baby nurse,” but we now have a better suited name for this specialty.
Newborn Care Specialists are familiar with the normal care and development of a newborn baby and can provide parents with confidence that their baby is developing appropriately. They can teach the family general care practices, including bathing, diapering, and feeding the new baby. Newborn Care Specialists keep up with “best practices” by utilizing resources including the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and other professional health organizations.
Newborn Care Specialists provide education to their clients which will allow them to make the best decisions for their families. They are trained on the basics of newborn sleep habits, breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and the care of multiples, premature infants, and other specialized needs. Newborn care specialists also have an understanding of perinatal mood disorders and know when to refer families to seek additional mental health support. Newborn care specialists work with families to empower parents and nurture newborns.
